Forget about the overpriced store-bought kits. We're going to show you how to create the coolest Easter eggs! For best results, don't forget to soak your hard-boiled eggs in a vinegar bath for 2-3 minutes so the color really takes to the egg shells. We prefer gel food coloring to liquid or powdered food coloring as it gives you the most control over your design in the whipped cream.

Bonus: this egg dyeing method uses all edible ingredients, so you can use your eggs for a delicious egg salad when you're done displaying them! We suggest using this scrumptious recipe for a simple Easter lunch.

PREP TIME: 15 minutes

TOTAL TIME: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 12 hard-boiled eggs
  • Vinegar
  • Whipped cream
  • Gel food coloring (up to 4 colors)
  • Disposable or dish gloves (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

STEP ONE

Place your hard boiled eggs in a large bowl. Pour enough vinegar over to cover your eggs. We used apple cider vinegar because it's what we had on-hand. You can also use plain white vinegar. Let stand 2 to 3 minutes. Remove and gently pat dry with paper towels, then fully air dry on a rack.

Teaching time! Did you know that eggshells are made of calcium carbonate? Calcium carbonate absorbs vinegar, which is an acid. As the calcium carbonate absorbs the vinegar, the acid breaks down (or dissolves). As it does so, it creates carbon dioxide gas, which is why your hard boiled eggs will be super bubbly when you remove them from the vinegar!

STEP TWO

Fill the cups of a muffin tin with whipped cream. Place drops of food coloring into whipped cream and use a toothpick to gently swirl your colors. Have fun, but do not overmix your colors!

STEP THREE

With a gloved hand, gently roll eggs through colors once until completely coated. We also found it worked well to use a toothpick to roll the eggs through the whipped cream! Let eggs sit 10-15 minutes in the whipped cream.

Teaching time! Why do hard boiled eggs that have been soaked in vinegar create brighter Easter eggs? Well, food coloring is an acid dye. It bonds using hydrogen, and this chemical process only works in an acidic environment. This is why you want to soak your hard boiled eggs in vinegar before dyeing!

STEP FOUR

Remove eggs from pan and rinse with cool water. Place on baking rack to dry.
